Description

A filter flask (also called a Buchner flask, or vacuum flask), is a thick walled Erlenmeyer flask with a single glass neck, supplemented with a protruding barbed connection point.

The barb is used to introduce a source of vacuum to the flask (such as a vacuum pump or aspirator), most often to draw filtrate through a Buchner funnel. This accelerates the filtration speed significantly by providing pressure differential though a filter, which is a greater force than that which can be provided by gravity alone.

The thick walls on these flasks provide a degree of durability with withstand the introduced vacuum and pressure differential.

These flasks feature a ground glass joint, making them perfect to connect to jointed Buchner funnels.

A vacuum flask can also be used as a vacuum trap to prevent the carry over of fluids from a vacuum pump or aspirator into the evacuated apparatus.

These flasks were named after the industrial chemist Ernst Büchner.
