Description

An Allihn condenser is a glass tube with a water jacket. Their uses include distillation, reflux and extraction.

Vapor from a distillation is run through the glass tube and recondensed by the cooling effect of running water through the water jacket, and flows through the tube into a receiving flask.

Longer condensers allow for the cooling of higher temperature vapors, but increasingly require the support of retort stands.

Allihn condensers have the advantage of greater surface area due to the bulbed nature of the glass tube, meaning more condensation can happen in a shorter length. This makes them suitable for use with liquids with a low boiling point, such as diethyl ether.

These also have the strong advantage of being simple to clean as well, saving time and money, and a simple brush and water can be used for most cleaning applications.

These Allihn condensers have two ground glass joints which are compatible with most of the glassware here at LabGeek, making for hassle free connections. When fitted, these glass joins provide a tight seal to prevent leakages.

Joint clips are highly recommended to keep these joints securely in place.

This type of condenser was first created by Felix Richard Allihn (the condensers namesake) who was a German scientist.
